Luka Modric and Sergio Ramos are in contention for a return to action in Real Madrid's Champions League last-16 clash against Schalke on Tuesday night.

The pair trained alongside the rest of the Madrid squad at Valdebebas on Monday morning as Carlo Ancelotti watched over the final session before the visit of the German club.

Ramos returned to group training on Sunday after recovering from a hamstring injury while Modric trained normally throughout last week but was not included in the squad that fell to defeat at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Ancelotti already confirmed that Modric would be involved in the second leg but it remains to be seen if the Croatian will be a starter or will have to settle for a place on the bench.

Ramos will be a bigger doubt owing to his later return to training and Ancelotti will not want to take any risks on one his key players with the crucial Clasico clash with Barcelona less than two weeks away.

Sami Khedira also trained normally alongside the rest of the squad and will be in contention to be selected against Roberto Di Matteo's side. There was no Martin Odegaard at training, however. The 16-year-old has been included in Ancelotti's European squad but he will miss out on the chance of becoming the youngest-ever player to feature in the Champions League.

Madrid lead 2-0 from the first leg and will look to progress to the last-eight and repeat their success against Schalke from last season.
