United serious on Ramos; Madrid looking for €65 million

Manchester United may step-up their efforts to sign Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos in the coming days. Reports yesterday linked the Premier League giants with Madrid's unhappy centre-back but they were tinged with the suspicion that the player and his agent were using the club as a bargaining tool for a new contract at the Bernabeu. However, The Independent is today reporting that the Old Trafford club are pushing to sign the player and that Madrid would accept a sum of €65 million for the man they signed from Sevilla ten years ago. Ramos has two years left to run on his Madrid contract and negotiations over a new deal have stalled. It is rare that Los Blancos allow contracts to run into their final two years, especially where key players are involved. Reports in Spain suggest the player is frustrated with the matter and that Madrid are not prepared to offer him the kind of deal he wants to remain in Spain. United also hold the bargaining chip of David de Gea, who is expected to join Madrid this summer but in Spain they want the deal done sooner rather than later. Jordi Majo, running for the Barcelona presidency, said he was offered Ramos as part of his election campaign and although those close to the player rubbished the comments, a response from Madrid as a club was not forthcoming. What is clear is that Ramos is currently far from happy and moves will have to be made if he is to remain at Madrid or move to Manchester.
