It isn't even January yet,but the overactive minds that make up the press, and Twitter in general, seem to be linking Real Madrid with a certain Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, with an air of finality. We've been linked with this diminutive 19 year old for quite a while now, along with Barca and Chelsea among many others. Everybody and Pele has an opinion about Neymar's considerable potential, but the amounts currently being bandied about would put the teenager comfortably within the top 5 most expensive transfers of all time.
But I have one question for all my fellow Madridistas: ¿Por qué?
It isn't like we don't have enough wingers already, and our team finally seems like a team after years of reckless permutations and combinations. Who would Neymar displace in our lineup in any case? He's not built enough to be the lone forward in Mourinho's system, and he'd have to compete against Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel di Maria for a spot in the wings. CR7 will be an untouchable, naturally, leaving di Maria's spot up for grabs. But di Maria brings in an endless level of energy along with a considerable amount of skill in his wide berth. Sure, he tends to not let go of the ball every now and then; his crosses can be cringeworthy too, often enough. He came in for a great deal of criticism at the start of the season, and with good reason. But he has 7 assists in 7 starts for Real Madrid. Those stats alone prove that di Maria's role in the team, as understated as it is, is crucial.
Neymar, on the other hand, is the kind of free roaming wide forward who seems to be every bit the Brazilian he is - every dribble brings out a sense of joie de vivre, every goal a natural exultation of the spirit of Joga Bonito. But we've burnt our hands (and feet and whatnot) with another onetime wonderkid and apparent Pele heir - Robinho. The unmitigated disaster that was Robinho's spell at Madrid alone makes one question the wisdom of upsetting the Los Blancos' apple cart by adding a precocious teenager to the squad, along with a bloated transfer fee and bloated ego.
Don't get me wrong, Neymar is a great player, and he could be an unbelievably great addition to the ranks of players who've donned our legendary white jerseys. However, this could be too much, too soon, in my opinion.
If I were Mourinho, I'd wait and watch while Neymar matured at least a bit more.
But the fact is, I'm not, so what do you think?
We already have countless players who don't get much (if any) playing time, including Callejón; what do we need Neymar for? To disrupt the balance that we finally seem to have found? To warm up the bench? Grrrr! Oh well... we'll see...
