It's a wrap!

Pepe is a double edged sword

by SiempreReal Jan 22, 2012, 10:41 am

There's been a lot of talk about the events of Wednesday night, and that'll continue to happen. For those of you who missed it, Pepe came under the scrutiny after the game for intentionally stamping on Messi's hand, and then for orchestrating a perfect swan dive, clutching his face, as soon as a Cule brushed his shoulder; a la Busquets. Cue: A worldwide smear campaign headed by the Catalan press to paint Pepe to be the monster that he is. This isn't going to be a post to defend those actions.

Captain Pepe leading the Real Madrid ship

In the heat of battle, that was probably the most entertaining moment of the match. And you have to say they had it coming. Pepe, the man that embodies that fundamental fire that burns in the hearts of the Madridismo, giving all the s**t back to Barcelona that they dumped on him last season. Busquets for his racist filth against our little Brazilian, and Pedro and Mascherano for their pathetic diving at the drop of a hat.

And then of course, there's Lionel 'The Saint' Messi, whose boots obviously slipped as he shot straight at the Bernabeu crowd from close range. No, he could never put a foot wrong.

So when our boys were manhandling theirs and giving them a taste of their own medicine, I was cheering louder than anyone. Defeat be damned. But like a drunk hookup with a very promiscuous woman, I woke up the next morning feeling like a sack of rocks. Although deep down, most of us would like nothing more than to kick Dani Alves's teeth in, it was a dumb decision on our defender's part to intentionally try to harm another player like that.

But what're you gonna do? Pepe is a double edged sword. He bleeds Real Madrid. Because of his transfer fee, he took a pay cut to play for us. He defends his club's badge through thick and thin. He goes after every ball like there's no tomorrow, and terrorizes opposition players in the process. And that is also his downfall. His competitive streak leads him to kick players on the ground, stamp on their hands, and completely lose it in the process.

I don't think any amount of media recrimination is going to change him. With Pepe, you get what you see. This same player's passion and drive, is going to win us a major trophy one day, when the clock is running down, and everybody's exhausted, he'll make the lung bursting run, or the goal-line clearance that'll save the game. That's just who he is. If he does something truly hurtful one day, sell him. But until then, we need to accept him for who he is. All heart and soul.
