Coentra was given the nod over Marcelo, the Brazilian was left on the bench.

Diarra started in midfield, Benzema and Higuain both started the game which does not happen too often.

Pepe started in midfield for Real Madrid, Mourinho wanted to make the midfield as compact as possible.

The home team got off to a flying start, Benzema found Ronaldo with a through ball and the player scored a fine goal in the 11th minute of the game. The ball went through the legs of Pinto and it was a horrible error by the keeper.

Barcelona settled down well after conceding an early goal.

Alexis Sanchez almost restored parity in the 16th minute but the ball came back off the crossbar, Casillas was a very relieved man upon seeing the ball come back off the crossbar.

Pepe was booked in the 18th minute, it was a bad foul on Sergio Busquets and the referee was quick to show Pepe a yellow card.

Pique of Barcelona was shown a yellow card just two minutes later for a foul on Pepe.

Ronaldo stood out in the first-half, he worked like a trojan, he also covered for Coentrao whenever possible and he was always available for a pass.

Real Madrid went into the half-time break leading 1-0.

Barcelona looked a different side in the second-half, parity was restored in the 48th minute. Puyol scored a fine header for Barcelona, Pepe was marking him but could not do much about the goal. It was a defensive lapse.

Iniesta rattled the crossbar in the 54th minute, the momentum clearly shifted in the favor of Barcelona in the second-half.

Karim Benzema hit the post in the 57th minute, the player should have done better. He was in a great position but could not even hit the target.

Barcelona went ahead in the 77th minute, Messi's pass found Abidal who beat Casillas.

Barcelona won the game 2-1, it was another frustrating night for the Real Madrid fans, some of them even exited early from the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid will have to score twice and concede none in the away leg if they are to progress in the Copa del Rey.

The question is just how do we stop them?
