Sergio Ramos and Pepe both started in defense for Real Madrid, Sami Khedira was selected ahead of Lass Diarra and Higuain who has been in fine scoring form dropped to the bench, former Lyon player in Karim Benzema started the game for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid took time to settle down, a few misplayed passes broke down the momentum in the opening few minutes of the game.
Gomis was the lone man upfront for Lyon and looked dangerous on certain occasions in the opening half.
The first shot of the game came from Ronaldo in the 7th minute, it was a surprise but Hugo Lloris dealt with it really well and pushed it away. Ronaldo was looking really hungry for goals and it was a good sign.
Ronaldo and Marcelo exchanged passes playing exquisite one touch football but they failed to score, their intent was clear thought.
The first goal came in the 19th minute, Ozil took the corner which was flicked by Ronaldo and former Lyon player in Benzema scored his first goal of the game, Sergio Ramos was also lurking and tried to claim the goal but it was clearly scored by Karim Benzema.
Benzema had a poor first-half, he failed to control a lovely pass from Xabi Alonso. It could have been a clear goal scoring opportunity had the player brought the ball down.
Marcelo, Ramos and Pepe made some comical errors in defense. On one occasion Gomis put the ball in the back of the net but the goal was ruled out because the striker was in an offside position, the defensive frailties were there for all to see.
Di Maria who started the game for Madrid showed great energy levels, he was perhaps making a point to the manager. He chased down almost everything and won possession of the ball on many occasions in the opening half.
Madrid entered into the break leading 1-0, Benzema should have scored more goals and Ronaldo also had a few opportunities but he failed to score in the first-half.
Madrid got off to a flying start in the second-half, Benzema made amends for his earlier mistakes by setting up Sami Khedira who scored his first goal for Real Madrid. It was a slip from a defender which allowed Benzema all the time in the world, Khedira made a fine run and Benzema unselfishly passed the ball to Khedira who did the rest. It was a great start to the second-half.
The third goal came in the 55th minute, Lyon's defense was all at sea. Ozil tried to square the ball for Benzema who was at the far post but Lloris who is regarded as one of the best in Europe made a grave mistake and the ball sneaked into the goal post. The game looked done and dusted after the third goal went in.
Sami Khedira who scored his first goal for the club was injured in the 61st minute, it was a head injury and he was replaced by Fábio Coentrão.
Ozil was replaced by Kaka in the 66th minute, the player had a decent game.
The ball was in the back of the net again, Ronaldo scored this time but it was ruled out because Kaka was in an offside position and even got a slight touch to the ball.
Benzema was replaced by Higuain in the 72nd minute, it was a good outing for the former Lyon player.
The fourth goal came in the 81st minute, it was shambolic defending again from the Lyon defenders. They failed to clear their lines from a corner and Ramos got on the act scoring a fine goal.
Real Madrid won the game 4-0, it was a clean-sheet for Casillas overall it was a great result for the home side who now have nine points after having played three games in the Champions League.
1st comment jaja anyway it was a great night the team played in harmony, I loved it and I was hoping for CR to score and he did but was cancelled, I loved the "rockets" that was fired by CR.. but Di Maria wasn't really convincing, I didn't felt he was really there I don't know... sorry for the long comment and Hala Madrid
Great, fun match to be at! The second half was very lively, the chants were endless. I got some video I'll post soon. Hala Madrid! The Lyon curse has ended....
Nada, you can post longer comments if you feel like it, they are welcome! - It was a great game, many goals, but I have a mixed personal feeling because I couldn't focus on the game during the first half (I was busy taking pics and stuff) and therefore I don't feel I have a solid understanding of what happened like I do when I'm at home or when I'm not taking pictures... :-( Oh well... It was great to be there anyway, of course, especially having won, scored many goals and leaving with a clean sheet.
Yeah, that sucks, you want to take pictures but also enjoy the match. I have the same problem when we go to tennis tournaments!
thanks Gaëlle, yeah I know how you feel! it's annoying when you get distracted, for me my distraction is my brother he keeps annoying me so I can't watch the games or sometimes I get home late so I miss them :S but thank God tonight I got home just in time
Loved Mourinho's comments on Ronaldo post match. Stating he prefers the selfless Cristiano and that maybe if he continues to play like this he'll win more important things than the Picchi. It sounds like he's praising him, but actually he's having a bite. Brilliant. :D
The team has to come first! Or as Sheldon would have it: The interest of the many outweighs the interest of the few! :-D
