Official: Real Madrid confirm Rafa Benitez as new coach

Rafa Benitez has been confirmed as Real Madrid’s new coach.

The news has been an open secret for a number of weeks but the Spaniard was confirmed as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor on Wednesday morning through an official club statement.

It read: “Real Madrid C. F. will present Rafa Benítez as the new first team coach for the next three seasons today, Wednesday 3 June.

“The ceremony will take place at 1pm CEST in the presidential box of the Santiago Bernabéu. Following his unveiling, Rafa Benítez will hold a press conference in the press room.”

The former Napoli, Chelsea, Inter, Liverpool and Valencia boss arrived in Madrid on Monday after ending his two-year stint in Serie A.

  1. The enduring positive legacy of Jose Mourinho as coach of Real Madrid was that by hiring him, Florentino Perez was able to finesse the club exits of Raul, Guti, and Salgado without taking the blame. One wonders if that strategy is at play with this hiring again.

Regardless, welcome Benitez, do your best. Mourinho’s teams beat Atletico to a pulp, and Ancelotti was hopeless against them. Had we won both our league games against them this year, we would have won the Liga. It should be a simple task for a born and bred Madridista.
