Let the new era begin

Wednesday afternoon will truly mark the start of a new era at the Santiago Bernabéu.

No more photoshopped Twitter posts of potential new signings in the Real Madrid shirt. No more ‘#AnnounceJovic’ messages. No more front page newspaper rumours. This time it’s real.

At 13:00 CEST Madrid will show off the first of their summer recruits – Serbian international Luka Jovic. Eden Hazard is expected to follow soon after – as early as Thursday evening – and Ferland Mendy has been all-but announced. Add to that list Rodrygo and Éder Militão and Madrid have been efficient in their summer recruitment – and that’s even before the rumours of Paul Pogba, Christian Eriksen and Kylian Mbappe heat up.

It’s a sign of intent from Florentino Pérez following a disastrous campaign in which Los Blancos only had the FIFA Club World Cup to show for their efforts. Three managers and countless millions of Euros later and Madrid finally look like they are ready to compete for silverware once again.

It feels like a while since the last squad revolution. Madrid’s success in the Champions League, coupled with the club’s desire to redesign its stadium, has meant consistency within the squad but that consistency was finally shown up last season. A rebuild was required and a rebuild has been carried out.

If Zidane’s return towards the end of last season was not enough to get madridistas back onside, the summer spending certainly will be. Results, understandably, petered out towards the back of last season, despite the Frenchman’s return, but all eyes were always on the summer, new signings, and the chance to be ready to go again come August.

Now Madrid fans will be able to catch a glimpse of their latest new recruit in the flesh for the first time and the excitement will start to build. Jovic’s unveiling is only the first part of the jigsaw but his signing is enough to get madridistas excited for the new season.

That excitement should ramp up when former Chelsea man Hazard is presented, with reports suggesting the Belgian will receive a ‘Galáctico-type’ unveiling in the Spanish capital on Thursday night. The club are reported to want to give maximum exposure to a key arrival and have decided on an evening presentation and not the regular 13:00 CEST slot. It gives the chance for more news outlets to cover the event and more fans to pack into the stadium to welcome the star signing.

After the disappointment of last season fans can begin to get excited again. The summer is finally up and running.
